Old friends and new at Green Drinks

Greenville Green Drinks was held last night at Harry's Seafood Grill on the Riverfront, and I ran into some familiar faces.
David Knight, president of
Go Jute USA in Pennsville, N.J., was there. He's the guy with the big smile and the jute bag over his shoulder. What's jute? It's a fabric made from a plant, similar to hemp and linseed. David's bags are 100 percent biodegradable. As he says: "When you're done, throw them in the garden." Get more
facts on jute here.
The man on the left of the top photo is Mark Lannan of
BrightFields Inc., which he runs with his wife, Marian Young. BrightFields, based in Wilmington, is a consulting and service firm "delivering a full range of environmental investigation, audit, remediation and management solutions." Despite the tough economy, they've been hiring in anticipation of a recovery. Last year, Young and Lannan were honored as the Small Business Administration's
Delaware Small Business Persons of the Year.
I also ran into Phil Woods, who started
Spinners Mobile Bicycle Repair when he lost his job in the corporate world. (He's the guy in the yellow shirt in the top photo, the only one with his eyes open. Hey, I'm no
Fred Comegys.) Just so happens that Phil was
featured in The News Journal yesterday. He's a great guy, and obviously innovative and resourceful. Phil is a die-hard cyclist and says he really gets a kick out of fixing other people's bikes so they can get out and enjoy the sport, too. And what greener way is there to travel than by bike? Good luck to Phil.
Phil was talking to Claire of
Candles by Claire. She started making soy candles a few years ago as gifts for her children's teachers. Word of mouth spread, and soon Claire was running her own business. She now has dozens of scents, and her candles are clean-burning and, of course, plant based. Find out
what people are saying about Candles by Claire.
The brains behind Green Drinks are Lori and John Lake of
Green Delaware and
GreenTV. They're great hosts and have a knack for getting like-minded people together. Keep an eye out
here and on AllGreenToMe for more Green Drinks events in Delaware.
